Research
Ada Amendola is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Salerno in the academic field MAT/07, Mathematical Physics, a position she has held since the 2023–2024 academic year. She previously served as a tenure-track Assistant Professor under the Italian academic classification RTD/B in the field ICAR/08, Structural Mechanics. Professor Amendola earned her master’s degree with honors in Environmental and Land Engineering from the University of Salerno in March 2013 and received her Ph.D. in Structural Engineering and Building and Urban Rehabilitation from the same university in February 2017. Her research primarily focuses on the design and mathematical and mechanical modeling of innovative materials and structures. She has held visiting research scholar positions at several academic institutions in the United States and Europe, including the California Institute of Technology from December 2008 to February 2009, the University of Sheffield from July to September 2014, ETH Zurich from November 2014 to January 2015, and the University of California San Diego from August to October 2015. She currently serves as Principal Investigator of the FIS3 project “Tensegrity Extra-Tunable Metamaterials” (TEXMAT), funded by the Italian Science Fund (FIS) of the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and hosted by the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Salerno. The project began on May 31, 2026, and has a duration of 60 months. TEXMAT aims to establish a fundamental understanding of stress-wave propagation in highly nonlinear mechanical metamaterials and to exploit this knowledge for the development of innovative materials and devices for civil and mechanical engineering applications. By employing lattice systems based on tensegrity architectures, the project seeks to create complex metamaterials exhibiting unprecedented and highly tunable mechanical properties. In 2017, Professor Amendola received the AIMETA Junior Award in the Solid and Structural Mechanics category in recognition of her research on the mechanical modeling of tensegrity structures. She also received the International Computational Methods Young Investigator Award at ICCM 2018, the 9th International Conference on Computational Methods, held in Rome in August 2018. In addition, she received two Best Student Paper Awards at the international conferences MECHCOMP3, the 3rd International Conference on Mechanics of Composites, held in Bologna in July 2017, and MIMS16, the 2nd International Workshop on Multiscale Innovative Materials and Structures, held in Cetara in May 2016.
